Rain or Shine this Saturday, June 13 is Lemonade Day in Okotoks. This is an international national promotion put together to support our young entrepreneurs. Over 75 lemonade stands will be set up around Okotoks with students operating their individual stands.

The young entrepreneurs have designed their booths, found a spot to set up, got a one day business licence and produced a business plan. Each booth will be unique and the manager has chosen a charity for the profits. For example, the fellow setting up in front of the Wheel in his Limo-nade stand is raising funds for the Heaven Can Wait pet rescue. By the way he is selling baking as well as lemonade.

In this week’s Wheel you will find a map and a list of all the locations. We also have a Google map with all locations marked on our website which is also available on your smart phone.

Please come out and support all the young entrepreneurs.

Are you ready for this years Okotoks Parade Day? Well it is going to be a celebration for sure. The parade marshal will be no other than yours truly! Why in the world would I be asked to be the parade marshal? The answer is simple, the town will be celebrating the fact that I am retiring at the end of the month! No more Paul’s Place, no more rants. I’m sure you couldn’t be happier! Soon a new publisher will be announced and it will be onward and upward for this publication. So, come on out to the parade and cheer my retirement! Please don’t throw rocks as the car I will be in is not my own.

OK now that the news is out of the bag I only have a few more opportunities to tell you what I think about certain things. Remember I’m old and cranky so don’t get too worked up about my opinions.

I think the town should sell the Landmark site downtown and turn a negative cash flow into a positive. I can visualize a three-storey building with restaurants on the main floor with cool patios and some living quarters upstairs. The taxes from this will help pay for the upkeep of the plaza next door. When events are too big for the plaza the town closes the street anyway so there is no value in my mind to another plaza down the street. Some towns close their main street (or a portion of it) every weekend during the summer months. We could do that if need be. Seems to me that corner lot in downtown Okotoks is too valuable not to develop.
