The horrific destruction, death and suffering of the First World War was halted on November 11, 1918. The First World War had a catastrophic impact on the human species. Sixty five million people from thirty nations were involved in the war. At least ten million were killed. Twenty nine million were wounded, captured or missing. The war was so devastating that it was called the war to end war at the time. Unfortunately, we haven’t learned from our history and war still rages on in the world.

At the time of the First World War, Canada was a nation of about eight million people and our effort in the war was significant and historic. It’s almost hard to fathom that 619,636 people served in the Canadian forces in the First World War. Sadly 66,655 died in the war and another 172,950 were wounded.

On November 11 we remember all of the brave Canadians who gave their lives for our freedom. It’s also a time to show respect and thanks to those who have served and continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held in communities throughout the Foothills.

Will we ever find world peace? It would take incredible trust and goodwill, but anything is possible if everyone set their mind to it. Remembering our wars and conflicts and the toll that they have taken is a key step toward peace.
