2013 flood brought out the best of Foothills

There is an opportunity to find out some of the best spots in Okotoks thanks to the 2014 Best of the Foothills Readers’ Survey in this week’s edition of the Western Wheel. However, the Wheel forgot some key categories.

There is an opportunity to find out some of the best spots in Okotoks thanks to the 2014 Best of the Foothills Readers’ Survey in this week’s edition of the Western Wheel.

However, the Wheel forgot some key categories. I will be more than happy to oblige.

Best place to forget to pay for food — Southfork Restaurant in High River.

I have gotten wrapped up in conversation and forgot to pay a few times at this old-fashioned diner in High River. Hey it’s breakfast. I’m tired.

The first-time I got a call from a dining pal complaining about me being a deadbeat but he paid the bill. Since then, Mike, the owner of Southfork realizes I will come back to pay – usually the same day. Mike knows I am not a thief, I’m kind of stupid.

Southfork re-opened late last week and I look forward to forgetting to pay in the near future.

It’s the least I can do. Like all High River business owners, Mike is looking for normalcy after the flood after being closed for a year.

Best place to get heat stroke — Dawgs Stadium. In July of last year, myself and my girlfriend were roasting at a Dawgs game. She had stated she had lost her hats in the flood and was hot.

Bobbi Forno, co-owner of Grand Slam Sports, which operates the souvenir shop at Seaman Stadium, was sitting right behind us. Bobbi promptly gave her a free hat.

Worst guy to be sitting with while getting heat stroke — Bruce Campbell. Not only did he not buy his girlfriend a hat at Seaman Stadium last July, he failed to give up his hat.

Best place to go after a flood — Blackie. The community opened its doors for my girlfriend and I when were stranded. We were the first people to sleep in the Brickers’ new RV because we had nowhere to sleep the night of June 20. The entire community was there to help their neighbours to the west.

All of these “best ofs’ have a theme. The actions of Foothills residents during and after last year’s flood proved Okotoks and area is a great place to live. You don’t need a survey to know that.
