1941 - 2021
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Lloyd George Cowling. He passed away on October 19, 2021, with his family by his side at the Rimbey Hospital at the age of 80.
Lloyd was born on May 1, 1941, to Barbara and George Cowling in High River, Alberta. He was the third child out of four. Lloyd grew up in High River. In his younger years went to a country school (Windy Hill) and high school in High River. He was very much involved in the beef end of the 4-H.
In 1965, he married the love of his life Phyllis and in 1966 they bought and moved to the family farm just west of High River on what they call the Tongue Creek Road. In 1976, they sold the farm down south and moved to the community of Spruce View, Alberta.
Lloyd was very active in the Spruce View community involving himself in the Spruce View Lions Club for many years. He also helped build the Dickson Arena where he coached the girl’s hockey team for a few years. Lloyd also helped build the Spruce View Hall and worked at the Dickson Fertilizer Plant for about 20 years. If there was a neighbor who needed help, Lloyd was one of the ones that would be called as he was always willing to lend a hand.
Everyone knew how much he loved his horses. You could always find him doing chores with them, sometimes farming with them and even showing them during the summer occasionally. He even went to brandings and used the horses to drag calves to the fire. As kids, we remember in the winter, Dad thought it would be a good idea to break colts some went well and others took a bit more time, but we all had fun helping him.
Every year as a family, we would head down to the Calgary Stampede for the 10 days. Lloyd was part of the Old Time Rigs Downtown Attractions for many years. He loved to go, although occasionally he would get upset
Lloyd is survived by his daughter Barbara (Randy); sons Roy and Robert; sisters Pearl (Ron) and Ellen (George); and sister-in-law Joan; his 2 granddaughters: Desaree and Dallas and great granddaughter Jayde; 3 grandsons: Cody, Carson and Kyle (Jocelyn) and 2 great grandsons Jackson and Jace; 4 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren.
Lloyd was predeceased by his parents; wife and best friend Phyllis; grandson Terry; brother Norman; and his mother and father-in-law Eileen and Vinton Roy.
There will be an open house at the farm on Thursday, October 28, 2021 in the afternoon. Please drop in anytime.
