May 13th, 1930 – May 6th, 2022

It is with a mixture of sadness and rejoicing
that we announce the passing of our incredible
father, grandfather, great-grandfather and
friend, John (Jan) Ruim on May 6th, 2022.As we
mourn our loss here, we find comfort and peace
in knowing he will be reunited with our beloved
mother Trancy (Tryntje) and his Heavenly Father.

John was born to Reinder and Sijke Ruim on
May 13th, 1930, in Anjum, Friesland in the
Netherlands. It was always with great fondness
that John would share stories of his childhood
in Holland. After meeting and marrying his
beautiful wife Tryntje, they decided to take on
the grand adventure of moving to Canada. Once
here, they would settle in Edmonton and raise
three beautiful children and live a very full life.

Our Dad enjoyed his career working for the City
of Edmonton in the traffic department for many
years. To his last days, he stayed connected
with the important friends he made during his
time there.

John enjoyed a love of adventure that he shared
with everyone around him. He soaked in the joy
that came from many camping trips with the
Cubs, or the large family camping adventures
with Aunts, Uncles, Cousins as well as exploring
Kananaskis with his great grandchildren during
Covid. He reminded us daily of how important it
is to live with childlike wonder and appreciation
for each moment. He was quick with a joke, and
you could always count on a smile from John,
especially when he spoke of his family.

John will be lovingly remembered by his
children Mary (John) Fundytus, Randy (Cathy)
Ruim, and Shirley Ruim; Grandchildren Nicholas
(Gillian) Fundytus, Andrew (Randi) Fundytus,
Julie (Sheldon) Wieler, Ben (Chelsea) Ruim, Ian
(Natalie Buckley) Fundytus, Carly (Kip) Edwards;
Great Grandchildren Lucas, Brody, Jack, Aaron
and Olive; Sisters Ymkje Shuurman and Jennie
Ruim.

John was predeceased by his loving wife Trancy
(Tryntje), Parents Reinder and Sijke Ruim,
brother Jack Ruim, sisters Alice Delwell and
Rennie Vandenbos.

As we say goodbye to our Dad & Pake, we
are honoured to be stewards of his legacy by
following the great example he set for all of us.
We will continue to be kind and spread joy and
laughter wherever we go.

We invite you to join us in celebrating John’s
Life on Thursday May 12, 2022, at the Okotoks
United Church at 1:00pm, for an in-person
service. If you can not join us in person, we

more about how you can join us online.
