It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Kerber on September 5, 2021, at the age of 87 years.
Dave was born on October 29, 1933, to the parents of William and Margret Kerber in Turner Valley, Alberta Dave’s delivery was helped by the assistance of a mid-wife, which was common in those days. Dave was the 13th child in a family of 14 siblings, of which all have predeceased Dave.
Dave attended school just north of Turner Valley, to which he went up to grade 9. The family then later moved to Black Diamond in 1946, where they purchased a farm. Here Dave worked for 20 years, doing odd jobs to help run the farm.
After the farm was sold,Dave went and worked in a sawmill for 5 years, just west of Millarville working for a $1.00 an hour. Then later in his life he went to Calgary to work in the construction trade from 1966-1971. Then in that same year (1971) Merle and Dave went into partnership with Albert Straub and worked in a fabrication steel shop in S.E. Calgary till 1976.
One of Dave’s biggest accomplishments was in 1966, when Dave, Vic, Vern Kerber and Eric Mick were able to construct a wooden oil derrick that still stands today in Heritage Park.
Dave was also an avid hunter, along with his friends went every fall to shoot their allotment of moose and deer for the freezer. When Dave finally retired from working Merle bought a house in Ogden where Dave moved in with Merle for 35 years. Then with failing health Dave went to reside in New Walden Age Centre from December 2018 to his passing in September 2021.
Dave will be sadly missed by all his nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Dave was held at Snodgrass Funeral Homes in Okotoks on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. and an interment will follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens in Calgary.
