1948 - 2020

Bruce John Akitt passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home on the farm near High River, Alberta. Born in Drumheller as the youngest of six, Bruce grew up in the rural area of New Hill District, located Southwest of Eckville. Before graduating from David Thompson High School in 1965, Bruce was involved in 4-H and numerous sports. Following high school, Bruce met his wife Lucille Schacht at a Junior UFA camp, and they later reunited when Bruce began his studies in education at the University of Calgary. In the spring of 1968, they married and had two children, Trevor and Tonianne. After receiving his master’s degree in education, Bruce taught in the Calgary Public, Foothills and Wildrose School Divisions as well as various private schools. Eventually Bruce opened a Kumon Math and Reading Franchise in the High River and Okotoks area which he operated for the last twenty-five years. Although Bruce’s passion was teaching, he enjoyed working on the farm with his wife, Lucille, where they raised purebred Gelbvieh cattle and participated in many cattle shows around Alberta and the United States. Before his passing, Bruce and Lucille were still farming and maintaining a cow-calf operation.

Bruce will be dearly missed by his wife, Lucille, of nearly fifty-one years, his children, Trevor (Susan) Akitt and Tonianne (Matthew) Witschi, his granddaughters, Charlee and Mckenzie Witschi, his brothers, David (Marion) Akitt, Don Akitt and Robert (Judy) Akitt, and many nieces and nephews.

Bruce is predeceased by his parents Richard and Alice Akitt, his brother Carl Akitt and sister Rosina.
