DAVEY

August 22, 1940 – January 16, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Barry Claire Davey announces his passing, on the evening of January 16, 2022, at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta.

Barry was born August 22, 1940, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, first son of Gordon and Rowena Davey. That is where he spent most of his early years with his brother Dennis and sister Elaine. Following High School, Barry attended Michigan College of Mining and Technology (Michigan Tech), where he received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in June of 1963. It was not long after that he met Emma, and they were married on June 20, 1964, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Their happy marriage lasted over 57 years. Barry and Emma had 4 children and were blessed with 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Barry is survived by his brother Dennis Davey (Laureen), sister Elaine (Austin MacKay) and their respective families. He leaves behind his wife Emma and his legacy of the families of his son Gordon and wife Dawn, daughter Kristin and her husband Wayne Tordon, daughter Pamela and husband James Serafinus, and daughter Jackie and husband Jason Rawn. Barry was very proud of all his children. His grandchildren Justin (Amanda), Logan (fiancée Allison), Conner, Megan (fiancé Borden), Morgan, Jessica, and Harrison were the joys of his life. He was always quick to talk about what they were doing and very proud of the people they had become. He was also graced with three great-granddaughters Malieah, Ember, and Everly-Lynn.

Barry had a long and productive career that spanned more than five decades. From electrical engineering to mining and government ministries, he settled on Health and Safety as his passion. He worked for multiple companies, improving or developing their safety protocols and making many workplaces a better place to be. His career in safety was a global one and while he travelled across Canada, he also consulted in Mexico, Trinidad Tobago, and Dubai. From safety harnesses to seatbelts, WHMIS to Transportation of Dangerous Goods, no detail was too large or too small to attract his attention, if he could make it safer for the workers in the field.

Barry was a proud Freemason for over 50 years, a love inspired by his father and the Masonic history on his mother’s side. His true passion was being a Shriner and working whenever he could for the children needing the services of Shriners Hospitals. Barry would never pass on an opportunity to put on his Fez and proudly proclaim he was a Noble of the Shrine. His last days before being admitted to hospital were spent volunteering at a casino, a major fundraiser for the great work that the Shrine does.

Barry will be sadly missed by all who loved and knew him. Dad’s final wish would be that anyone wishing to send condolences consider donating to Shriners Hospital for Children in lieu of flowers:

Our family would like to express our gratitude to the Nurses, Doctors and other Staff from Oilfields, Rockyview and Foothills Hospitals who cared for him and his family in his final days.

A Memorial Service will be announced at a future date.
