LODZ, Poland — Canada's four-match win streak at the women's world volleyball championship came to an end on Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to Turkey.
“We lacked a little urgency and focus at those key moments,” Canadian captain Jen Cross of Scarborough, Ont., said of the 25-22, 26-24, 28-26 defeat.
“We made mistakes at important moments and against a great team like them, it just makes it very difficult. We don’t have a match tomorrow, so we’re going to take a day to refocus and get ready for the next match.”
Kiera Van Ryk of Surrey, B.C., paced Canada with 20 points, while Turkey's Ebrar Karakurt led all scorers with 26.
Canada's record dropped to 4-3 with the loss.
“I think our serve and pass broke down,” said Canada coach Shannon Winzer. “The first part of the game we made a lot of service errors and it’s hard to find your rhythm when you struggle from the base line."
Canada plays host Poland on Friday and wraps up the second phase of the world championship on Saturday against the Dominican Republic.
The 19th women's world championship is co-hosted by the Netherlands and Poland with matches played in three Dutch and three Polish cities until Oct. 15.
