Son surpasses father in world titles

A High River chuckwagon driver has moved to the top of the Glass.

When Jason Glass won his fourth world title Saturday, it gave him one more than his father, Tom Glass.

“Not enough,” joked Tom, when asked how many world championships he has won. “Yeah, he’s one ahead of me. I’m going to start driving again — I might have to crack open next year and run again.”

The legendary Glass family has won a combined 11 world titles including Ron Glass, Tom’s father, who won four World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA).

Jason, 41, wasn’t placing any emphasis on surpassing his dad.

“I don’t think I ever would have if he hadn’t retired at 50 — he could have won another four or six,” Jason said. “I don’t try to compare to other people’s records because every year is so different.

“It is so hard to win one, let alone multiple times.”

Ron won the world championship in 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1965. Tom won his world championships in 1980, 1981 and 1989.

As far as seeing another black-and-white checkerboard wagon on the WPCA circuit, the other drivers can breathe a sigh of relief.

Even though the 63-year-old Tom could drive for a few more years before hitting the mandatory retirement age set by the WPCA, he’s not coming out of retirement.

“I was only joking,” Tom said. “I am really proud of Jason.”

However, maybe mural artist Paul Van Ginkel might have to do some extra painting. His historic mural on the south side of the CIBC parking lot in High River, which was done in 1993, has legendary drivers Hank Willard, Lloyd Nelson and Ron and Tom Glass.

Perhaps High River should complete the Glass set and add Jason.
