Okotoks youth bowlers triple down on record championships

Millennium Lanes Okotoks bowlers make history at Calgary Intracity event

In a numbers game like bowling, three-for-three is tough to beat.

The Millennium Lanes Okotoks Youth Bowling team entered three events at the Calgary and area Peewee Intracity Championships and won gold not once, not twice, but thrice in mixed team, boys team and girls single in the Stampede City.

“This is the first time Millennium Lanes has ever brought home three trophies in this tournament,” said coach Wendy MacDiarmid. “It’s the first time we’ve ever brought home the mixed team trophy and the first time we’ve ever brought home the girls single trophy.”

Dawson MacDiarmid, 6, Hendrix de Boer, 6, and Paisley de Boer, 7, and coach MacDiarmid, took home the mixed team title.

“They were bowling against kids quite a bit younger than they were and they actually ended up winning 109 pins above second place,” the coach added. “Paisley and Hendrix are basically little bowling machines. Hendrix loves the sport to the point where last year he would get upset when he was done his bowling for the day.

“They’re brother and sister and both come by it naturally and Dawson is my grandson and has only been bowling a couple of years now and has really come a long way this year.”

Sophia Wardley struck gold in the girls single event by a two-point margin with the boys team of Andrew Honish, Bennett Flentje and Carter Richard, along with coach Kyle Honish, earning top spot in its division by eight pins.

The Millennium Lanes contingent also fielded a second squad in the mixed team comprised of Emmett Evans, Alexis Evans, Thomas Wardley and coach Tom Evans.

The intracity event is the highest level the peewee age group can compete at and gives the young up-and-comers a chance to get their competitive toes wet ahead of opportunities to compete in provincial and national events.
