Okotoks teams made it to three finals at a marquee Family Day weekend basketball showcase.
At the Magrath Heartbreaker, the Holy Trinity Academy Knights senior boys took silver, the Foothills Falcons girls earned the bronze and the Foothills boys brought home the consolation title from the Feb. 15-17 event featuring a number of the top ranked teams in the province.
HTA took out the Cardston Cougars 87-59 in its opener led by Xavier Krueger’s 22 points, 20 rebounds and nine assists performance with Owen Vanin chipping in 17 points.
The semifinal saw the Knights, the No. 9 ranked 4A team, edged the host Magrath 94-84 led by a strong shooting performance with a 48 per cent success rate from three-point range.
Krueger scored 23, Lucas Barlow had 20 with Vanin adding 19 and sharpshooter Charlie Humphries knocking in 15.
In the final, the No. 2 ranked Raymond Comets soared to a 75-51 result.
Facing a tough draw, the Falcons boys rebounded from an opening 68-64 loss to the No. 4 ranked Medicine Hat High with a pair of triumphs.
Foothills then bested the No. 5 ranked St. FX in a 74-73 nailbiter with Van Kerrison hitting a pair of late free throws to secure the win as part of an 18-point performance.
The Comp kept up the momentum in the consolation final with a convincing win over Cardston.
In the girls bracket, the Falcons added another piece of silverware to their collection.
The fourth-ranked Foothills dispatched Cardston 77-49 led by Savanah Sommerfeldt’s 19 points and nine steals from Ashleigh Baker.
In the semifinal, Foothills was downed 86-60 by the top-ranked Raymond Comets. Sommerfeldt had a team-best 17 points with Ella Watkins and Dior Sellars both hitting double-digits.
A strong defensive performance in the bronze medal match powered Foothills to a 53-36 triumph. Sommerfeldt, a tournament all-star, again paced the team with a 22-point effort.
The next tournament action for the Falcons and Knights teams will be the South Central Zones in Airdrie on the second weekend of March.
