Former Olympic gold medal gymnast Kyle Shewfelt promised something different and exciting at the University of Calgary when he sponsored his first big competition. Shewfelt kept his word as over 500 athletes enjoyed lthe weekend as the meet provided competition, music, dancing, cheerleading and lots of fun.

Mountain Shadows gymnasts jumped right into the mix as they competed among the best and many spent several hours enjoying the show.

Starting day 1 off right, Jayda Newhook took a 2nd AA in the large P2 Tyro group with teammate Cassidy Rainbow matching her 2nd AA in P2 Novice.

Things really moved into high gear in the afternoon as advanced gymnasts took the floor with girls competing in P5 and National while the guys faced off in a Canada / US / China meet.

P5 girls from Mountain Shadows were a dominant group as 15-year-old Jenna Morrison took the top AA in the Open category followed by Nicole Lavoie in third. Jenna missed advancing to the Big Show Finals in bars by 0.1 and Nicole missed floor finals by the same margin but Lauren Lavoie advanced to her second straight Big Show Finals in vault. Lauren qualified in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho last month. Many Mountain Shadows gymnasts and parents enjoyed the Big Show Finals on Saturday evening and watch Lauren finish third.

As the weekend progressed, other Mountain Shadows gymnasts took the top of the podium. In P3 Tyro, Jordyn Bahr captured the 1st AA spot including a first place finish in bars with a high 13.00 score. In P3 Open, Alanah Harrison was 2nd AA.

Sunday morning the beginner P1 group were the main attraction and Mountain Shadows saw eight-year-old Callie Zacharias move up an age group and still top 14 gymnasts to finish 1st AA. Her nine-year-old teammate Aiden Doyle was 2nd AA and Mountain Shadows finished off the morning with Cassidy Fichtemann 3rd AA in P1 Tyro and Casidy Zeller 3rd AA in P1 Novice.

Overall gymnasts had an exciting and successful weekend and particularly enjoyed the Big Show Finals that featured celebrity judging by eight former Olympians from different sports. Kyle Shewfelt is to be congratulated for his efforts and fundraising for the Right to Play Foundation.

Mountain Shadows gymnasts now travel to Medicine Hat where P1 gymnasts vie for Southern Alberta Championships and the P2 and P3 gymnasts attempt to qualify for Provincial Championships in Lethbridge later this month.
