Despite another weekend blizzard all 21 Mountain Shadows gymnasts who qualified for Provincials arrived in Lethbridge for the Alberta Men’s and Women’s gymnastics championships.
Fifteen-year-old Shannon McIntosh of High River and 11-year-old Kylee Rude of Calgary led the charge as Kylee took the Provincial 2 Tyro AA title as well as being the Provincial 2 beam champ and Shannon, competing in the Provincial 4 Open category was AA Provincial winner and the Provincial champ in vault and floor. Kylee, in her first year as a Mountain Shadows gymnast, edged out teammate Emma Shewfelt by 0.2 for the AA. Emma, however claimed the title of Provincial floor champ.
Provincial Championships, which feature the top 24 gymnasts in Alberta in each age group, are a fiercely fought competition and Mountain Shadows gymnasts came away with more than their share of titles. Below are the medalists and top eight finishes in each group:
P2 Tyro -- Kylee R., 1st AA, 1st on beam; Emma S., 3rd AA, 1st on floor and 3rd on vault; and Haley A., 6th AA.
P2 Novice -- Cassidy R., 2nd AA, 2nd on bars and 3rd on floor; and Victoria P., 8th AA and 3rd on vault.
P3 Argo -- Jenna Z., 5th AA, 2nd on bars and vault.
P3 Tyro -- Jordyn B., 2nd AA, 2nd on bars and vault.
P3 Novice -- Liv P., 5th AA.
P3 Open -- Alanah H., 6th AA.
P4 Novice -- Morgan K., 3rd AA, 1st on bars; and Jordynn M., 5th AA, 1st on bars.
P4 Open -- Shannon M., 1st AA, 1st on vault, 1st on floor and 2nd on beam; and Danika G., 5th AA.
P5 Open -- Lauren L., 8th AA.
Mountain Shadows earned a total of 20 provincial medals and P4 Alberta Team champs.
Mountain Shadows gymnasts now prepare for their home meet, the Mountain Magic Invitational at the Centennial Arena on April 29-May 1. Becoming one of Alberta’s largest meets, MMI this year features 275 gymnasts from all over Alberta and B.C.
