The Foothils Phantoms take on Strathmore during 2022 action at the Bob Snodgrass Recplex. The Foothills Ringette Association is hosting its first major tournament, the Foothills Freeze, from Feb. 3-5 in Okotoks, High River and Nanton.

The growth of the Foothills ringette community will be on full display this weekend.

The Foothills Ringette Association (FRA) is hosting its first major tournament in its young history with the Foothills Freeze from Feb. 3-5 at three rinks in Okotoks, High River and Nanton featuring 16 teams and almost 200 athletes from across Alberta.

Jen Reed, FRA director of tournaments, explained the organization has built its way up to this point after launching in 2016.

“We have overwhelming support from local businesses who provided donations for our raffle baskets, silent auction and awards,” Reed said. “We are looking for sponsors for next year's tournament as we expect our tournament to grow.”

From drop-in ringette for three years, the association grew to the point where it could first ice teams in the 2019 season in the Chinook Ringette League.

In 2021, Reed joined the FRA board of directors in the newly created director of tournaments role and created a tournament committee.

From there, this weekend’s Foothills Freeze was born.

This season, the FRA has teams in five divisions: U10 Step 1, U10 Step 3, U12B, U12C and U14B.

In November, the Foothills Snipers U14 team became the first squad in FRA history to win a full-ice tournament when it took the SPRA Platinum Ring event in Sherwood Park.

The Foothills Freeze tournament will be primarily headquartered out of the Bob Snodgrass Recplex in High River, with games played at the Piper Arena at the Okotoks Recreation Centre and Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre in Nanton.

Following two days of round-robin action, the gold and bronze medal games will be played on Feb. 5 in High River and Nanton.
