Foothills Falcons advance to provincial basketball semifinal

The Foothills Falcons are through to the final four at the 4A girls basketball provincials.

Foothills earned a pair of victories on day one of the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association 4A Girls Provincial Basketball Championships in Red Deer and have a marquee matchup on deck in the semifinal round.

Foothills, the No. 4 seed, will play the top-ranked Raymond Comets in the first of two semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m.

The Falcons took out Medicine Hat High 76-57 in their opener and in the quarterfinal round got past a tough Magrath Pandas squad by a 61-54 score. Dior Sellars had 22 points in the quarterfinal victory with Foothills erasing a 13-point deficit at the half.

Also in Red Deer, the Holy Trinity Academy Knights boys, who were seeded fifth in the competition, had a bright start with a 73-50 win over Ross Sheppard.

The ensuing quarterfinal saw HTA upended 59-49 by the St. Francis Xavier Rams.

HTA will play the No. 1 seed Medicine Hat High on Friday at 3 p.m. with the winner earning a chance to advance to the fifth place final.

At the 2A championships, Diamond Valley’s Oilfields Drillers are competing on two fronts.

In Lethbridge, the Drillers girls are in the consolation bracket following the first day of competition.

Oilfields, the No. 8 seed, edged Central Alberta Christian 46-36 in its opener with Anya Pain posting a team high 16 points. The Drillers were then downed in quarterfinal round by the No. 1 seed Immanuel Christian.

On Friday, Oilfields takes on Kate Andrews with a spot in the consolation final on the line.

In Edmonton, the Drillers boys lost its only game on day one an 87-73 result to Rundle College.

Oilfields is up against Millwoods Christian, the host team, on Friday.
