Foothills curling teams swept their way to the provincial podium at a recent championship.

Two teams based out of Diamond Valley’s Oilfields Curling Club brought home medals from the Alberta 55 Plus Provincial Curling Championships held Feb. 22-25 in Cochrane.

In the open 75+ category, the Oilfields foursome of Okotoks’ Louis Peterson, Longview’s Rose Dayment, Diamond Valley’s Jim Nicolson and Foothills County’s Barb Larson combined for a silver medal finish.

It was bronze for the Oilfields based men’s 55+ team featuring High River’s Dean Schielke, Kevin Muir, Tim Paziuk along with Lloyd Copithorne from Cochrane.

Two other teams from the region competed for Zone 2 Big Country at the championships.

The Oilfields Club’s 65+ women’s team featured Diamond Valley’s Cathie Dallas, Tammy Connacher, Linda Nelson and Cheryl Fredell. Okotoks’ Glenys Bakker also skipped a team with three Cochrane teammates in the 55+ women’s event.

The gold medallists in each age category earned the right to advance to the Canada 55 Plus Games, held in Québec City in August.

From draws and freezes to smashes and drop shots, there’s more 55-Plus championships on offer this month. The Edison Badminton Centre in Okotoks will play host to the 55 plus provincials in the racquet sport on March 28.
