Dawgs split in Medicine Hat

The Okotoks Dawgs earned the split on the road in the opening round of the Western Major Baseball League playoffs, but were unable to get the sweep last night in Medicine Hat.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks evened the best of five series at 1-1 with a 10-3 victory over the Dawgs last night.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning, but the Dawgs cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the second on a two-run dinger by Trace Tam-Sing with Jerod Bartnik aboard.

Okotoks would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth when John Apostolo knocked in Bartnik.

That would be as close as the Dawgs would get.

Medicine Hat took the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth and put the game away in the seventh inning when the scored four runs to make it 8-3. They would add a pair of runs in the eighth for the 10-3 victory.

Danny Britton Foster took the loss for the Dawgs. The Mavs’ Levi Westerlund earned the win.

The series shifts to Seaman Stadium in Okotoks tonight at 7 p.m. with Ryan Rogers (4-3) getting the start for the Dawgs.

Game 4 is Friday at 7 p.m. in Okotoks. If necessary, Game 5 is scheduled for Medicine Hat on Saturday night.

In other WMBL playoff action last night the Regina Red Sox beat the Weyburn Beavers 13-6 to take a 2-0 lead in the series. The Swift Current Indians outlasted the Lethbridge Bulls and lead the series 2-0. The Melville Millionaires and the Moose Jaw Millers’ series is tied at 1-1 after Moose Jaw’s 10-4 victory last night.
