West was best in the inaugural WCBL All-Star Game.

Led by the Okotoks Dawgs coaching staff and players Davis Todosichuk, Richard Mascarenas, Tristan Peters, Liam Rihela, Jaxon Valcke and Andrew Yates the Western Division edged their Eastern foes 5-4 Sunday at Edmonton’s RE/MAX Field.

“It was good, I definitely enjoyed being able to represent Okotoks well,” said Yates, a lefty reliever from Indiana University. “And have a bunch of guys there that were deserving to be there.”

The wet weather in Edmonton put an early stop to the home-run derby with Lethbridge Bulls infielder Kaleb Warden being declared the winner with nine, but cleared up in time for the all-star showcase.

Peters, Mascarenas and Rihela all earned starting nods and three Dawgs played big roles on the scoreboard.

Mascarenas, Todosichuk, and Valcke all contributed RBI knocks for the Western winners.

“It was cool, especially because it was the first one so that was neat to be a part of,” said Yates, in his second year starring out of the Dawgs bullpen. “It didn’t go quite as planned, it was raining to start the day. The game ended up being good, the sun started coming out.

“I liked to talk to the other guys that got selected for the All-Star Game to meet them and see what they’re like.”

Edmonton Prospect pitcher Hunter Boyd earned the start pitching two innings as the Western Division worked a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

Yates pitched the
seventh inning and enjoyed the experience, not letting the dinger allowed to WCBL home run leader Jack Barrie from the Weyburn Beavers get to him.

“I like pitching there, I like that mound,” Yates said. “I did give up a bomb, but I wasn’t too mad about that.

“I’m glad that we won. It wasn’t super competitive, we jumped out to a lead early so we were kind of cruising, everybody doing their own thing, trying to steal bags. But at the end of the day I always like to win and I’m sure everybody else feels that way.”

The Western Division leading Dawgs (24-6) get back to league play with two straight versus Medicine Hat, July 8 in Okotoks and the following night in the Hat. The Dawgs then head north on the weekend to take on the Fort McMurray Giants for three straight from July 12-14.
