An Okotoks runner completed the four-kilometre portion of a foothills cross-country event with the weight of the ocean on his shoulders.
By the time Jason Olynyk was done, he had salted away $900 for Okotoks KidSport.
Olynyk was one of approximately 90 runners who ran in the Big Rock Runners-Calgary Road Runners 4K/8K cross-country run on Nov. 24 at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS). He did it with his one-year-old daughter Ocean on his shoulders.
“We were able to raise $900 for KidSport,” Olynyk said. “We went to local businesses and they were great.”
He received $100 from his fellow teachers at Holy Trinity Academy and another $100 when a hat was passed around among the runners at STS.
It was a tougher grind than he expected.
“The snow was a lot deeper than I thought it would be,” he said. “I felt so sorry for the runners who were in front of me that packed it down before I got there. The 4K felt like 14K.”
He said he hopes to raise $2,000 when all is said and done. To contribute to the cause send a check made out to KidSport Okotoks and mail it to 131 Crystal Green Dr. Okotoks, T1S OC7.
