Consistency is nice, but it’s even better when some speed is thrown into the mix.
High River’s Jason Glass droves his checkerboard wagon to the top of the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby aggregate standings by turning in the fastest run of Monday night — and the first four days of racing — at 1:12.05.
“I just went out there with the intention of trying to get around that top barrel,” Glass said on Tuesday morning. “I know I have beautiful horses and they couldn’t have worked any better.”
Glass went into Monday’s races in sixth spot in the aggregate, but after his blistering time sits atop the standings at 5:05.47, just .22 seconds ahead of second-place Logan Gorst.
He turned in his rapid performance from the three-barrel — a rare spot to win a heat, let alone the fastest time of the show.
“It’s usually 1 or 2 and every once and a while four,” Glass said. “It just worked out perfect for us last night.”
However, there are still four more nights of racing to determine which of the top 8 drivers after Friday’s performance will advance to Saturday’s two semi-final heats.
“There’s a long ways yet, four days, we are only halfway done anything can happen,” Glass said. “I am not going to make any drastic changes but hopefully we can keep plugging away.”
Blackie's Jordie Fike sits 16th in the aggregate after an impressive seventh place finish overall on Monday. Okotoks' Mark Sutherland climbed up to 25th place thanks to finishing ninth.
