The Cavalry attacking ranks continue to be bolstered.

The defending Canadian Premier League regular season champions announced 21-year-old attacking midfielder Lucas Dias has joined Cavalry FC on loan from the famed Portugese side Sporting Lisbon.

“Lucas is an exciting talent that has had a great upbringing in one of Europe’s top clubs,” said Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr., in a team release. “He is a clever, attack-minded player that wants to make things happen in the opponent’s half. We look forward to him wearing our crest and providing another attacking piece to our squad.”

Dias, a Toronto native, has been playing with top academies for over a decade.

After joining Sporting Toronto’s academy, he was subsequently invited to the club’s academy in Portugal at just 10 years of age, joining permanently the following year and inking his first professional contract with Sporting at 16.

Dias has earned 49 appearances with Sporting at the U19 and U23 levels along with Sporting CP B. In addition, he’s played internationally on four occasions for Canada’s U23 national squad.

Dias joins an array of attacking and midfield options on the Cavalry, a roster that features returning players Sergio Camargo, Ali Musse, Willy Akio, Myer Bevan, Charlie Trafford, Jesse Daley, Shamit Shome and Maël Henry along with off-season additions Lleyton Brooks, Tobias Warschewski and Diego Gutierrez.

“It’s a great feeling to now be part of this club and journey,” said Dias, in a Cavalry release. “I can’t wait to get started.”

Cavalry FC opens its account in the Concacaf Champions Cup on Feb. 21, the first of two matches with the MLS’ Orlando SC, at Starlight Stadium on Vancouver Island.
