Blackie's Fike racing in $50,000 final today

Fike's close friend, Kurt Bensmiller edges Vern Nolin to win his third-straight world title

Blackie's Jordie Fike is capping the best season of his young career with a chance to win his first WPCA title and a big cheque.

Fike finished in third spot after four-nights of racing at the Winners' Zone championship playoff chuckwagon races at Century Downs in Balzac to qualify for the finals on Aug. 25.

The competition had the top 12 drivers in the world competing over the past four nights at Century Downs for a chance to make the final four $50,000 championship heat today.

Joining Fike in the championship heat are first-place finisher Ross Knight, Kurt Bensmiller, who was second and Lightning Luke Tournier who squeaked in for fourth place.

Okotoks' Mark Sutherland and Chanse Vigen also finished in the top 12 to qualify for the Winner's Zone playoff.

Fike has to beat a close friend who happens to be a fourth-time world champion.

Bensmiller's strong showing in Balzac allowed him to edge Vern Nolin by just 29.5 points on the final day of racing for the 2019 world title. Nolin had led for most of the year.

It was Bensmiller's fourth world title in five years and his third consecutive one.

The aggregate champion among all 36 drivers at Century Downs was Chad Harden.

The final day of races goes today at 2 p.m. with Fike on the three-barrel in the championship last heat.
