The best young baseball players in the province will be putting on an extravaganza this weekend.
The Okotoks Dawgs Academy is hosting a Baseball Extravaganza — the provincial championship for the Performance Midget and Bantam divisions in baseball.
The Foothills Midget Black Dawgs are the defending champions and finished second in Canada last year.
They have only one aim for the provincial championships in Okotoks.
“All we are focused on is winning provincials,” Dawgs catcher/DH Ramon Valdez said.
The Black Dawgs finished the season with a record of 32-1 and are the No. 1 seed. The Foothills Red Dawgs, the No. 2 seed, and the White Dawgs will also be in the performance league.
The two-time defending Alberta champion Foothills Bantam Black Dawgs are in position to three-peat.
They will be challenged by the Bantam Red Dawgs.
The Bantams will play at the new Bantam Field and Riverside Park.
Following is the schedule for Dawgs’ Midget games at Seaman Stadium (SS) and Tourmaline Field (TF):
Dawgs Black: Aug. 1 — 5:30 p.m: vs Spruce Grove (TF); Aug. 2 — 11 a.m. vs. Red Deer (TF); Aug. 3 — 2 p.m. vs. Edmonton 1 (SS), 6 p.m. vs. Ft. McMurray (TF).
Dawgs Red: Aug. 1 — 5:30 p.m. vs. SP Gold (SS); Aug. 2 — 8:30 a.m. vs. Edmonton 2 (SS); 6 p.m. vs. Dawgs White (TF); Aug. 3 — 12 p.m. vs. SP Green (TF); Aug. 4 — 12 p.m. vs. St. Albert (TF).
Dawgs White: Aug. 1 — 8:30 p.m. vs. St. Albert (SS); Aug. 2 — 11 a.m. vs. Edmonton 2 (SS); 6 p.m. vs. Dawgs Red (TF); Aug. 3 — 9 a.m. vs. SP Green (TF); Aug. 4 — 9 a.m. vs SP Gold (TF).
The Midget final is Sunday at 5 p.m. at Tourmaline Field.
