UPDATE: Occupants in glider crash were student and instructor

Emergency crews responded to a downed glider just west of 128th Street, near Cu Nim Gliding Club, Friday afternoon.

According to EMS spokesperson Naomi Nania, the call came in around 4 p.m., Friday, July 26 that a tow plane had collided with a glider shortly after detaching.

When crews arrived on scene, the two occupants of the glider were declared dead. The single occupant of the tow plane was assessed at the scene but not transported to hospital.

The two deceased have since been identified as instructor Allan Wood, 68, and student, Adam Leinweber, 18, who were on a training flight at the time of the incident.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) investigated the crash site on Saturday.

"The preliminary part of our process is to do an assessment face, where we look at the site, collect data, look at the equipment, and gather all the facts we can," said TSB spokesperson Dean Campbell.

"At that point the investigators can start to go through all that and figure out next steps – that's really where we are right now."

Correction: An initial report indicated that the collision happened before detaching, but it was later found to be shortly after.
