Updated: Foothills Fire extinguishes fire near Cayley

Fire chief credits fast work of firefighters and farmers

The Foothills Fire Dept. has successfully extinguished a brush fire off 690 Avenue East near Cayley.

The call came in around 2:00 p.m. April 14, and when emergency crews arrived, they found a 10 acre grass fire spreading into a field on the north side of the road.

Firefighters from High River, Nanton, and Heritage Pointe responded, as well as several neighbours with machinery and water trucks to assist in the efforts.

As of 3:15 p.m., the fire was under control, said Foothills Fire Chief Rick Saulnier.

By 4 p.m., crews were tackling hot spots and clearing the scene.

"A lot of credit goes to the farmers out there, as well as the crews," Saulnier said. "They worked well together and cut fire breaks."

He added a neighbour across the field arrived with a grader and was able to cut a line around the entire affected area to effectively halt the fire in its tracks.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation is underway, Saulnier said.
