Fire crews from Foothills and Okotoks were able to successfully contain and extinguish a grass fire near DeWinton on March 20.

The call came in around 3:30 p.m. of a grass fire in the field on the northwest corner of 64 St. and 226 Ave. NW, said Foothills fire captain Alex Marshall.

Crews found a 10-acre grassy field ablaze and are currently fighting strong eastbound winds to keep it contained.

"Everything is dry here so the flames are spreading quick," Marshall said as they worked to prevent the fire from jumping east across 64 Street.

"It can change in the blink of an eye with these winds."

Continued efforts by the firefighters and additional teams from High River, Spruce Meadows, and Turner Valley helped tip the scales.

At 6:10 p.m. Foothills deputy chief Scott Young said the situation was well in hand.

"Currently everything is under control, we don't have any additional spread."

The fire was contained to a single property and did not endanger any homes.

Fire department bush trucks continued to wet the ground and tackle hot spots, and the landowner brought a tractor with disc harrow to break up the perimeter.

The fire started from a small fire pit ring at the top of the hill to the centre of the section of land, said Foothills chief Rick Saulnier.

By 7:30 p.m., it was out and the firefighters were leaving the scene.
