RCMP speculate alcohol and speed were factors in an early morning collision which killed a man just north of Okotoks.

A man was killed when the Toyota FJ Cruiser he was driving was struck by a Mercedes Benz on Highway 2A near 338 Avenue at approximately 1 a.m. May 6. The collision was just north of Okotoks, near the farmer's market.

The driver of the Toyota, a male of unknown aged, died at the scene. No resuscitation was initiated based on injuries sustained, according to a press release from Emergency Medical Services.

Paramedics arrived at the scene just past 1 a.m. not long after the collision.

The man driving the Mercedes, estimated to be in his 40s, suffered numerous non life-threatening soft-tissue injuries and was transported in stable condition to the Foothills Medical Centre by ground ambulance.

No charges have been laid at this time and the name of the victim is not being released until all family members are notified.

RCMP Criminal Collision Incident Team and RCMP Collision Analyst investigators attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing. Both speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the collision.

More details will be forthcoming in the Okotoks Western Wheel and its website.
