A total of $1,500 is available for one or more young performing artists between Grades 4-12, living west of 16 Street West in the Foothills County or Turner Valley, Millarville, Black Diamond, Longview, or Priddis.

Young performers can get a jump-start with a bursary funded by performing arts.

The not-for-profit society behind Turner Valley’s long-time Beneath the Arch (BtA) concert series is offering their Performing Arts Bursary to aid one or more performing young artists in Grades 4-12.

“I think especially in this day and age, families are challenged financially ,and we would hate to see children miss out on musical opportunities because of money,” said Cathy McVee, the BtA director overseeing the bursary.

“And this is definitely something we wanted to use to help those kids get better at music, explore their love for music.”

The bursary, she stressed, is open not only to musicians but all performing artists, but requires a demonstration of financial need along with the application and demonstration.

It is, however, limited geographically to applicants living in the Foothills County, but only west of 16 Street West, so it includes Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Millarville, Longview and Priddis, but not Okotoks and High River.

That fund, started some in the late ‘90s, is more important than ever, McVee added.

“The concert series itself has been going for a long time, and the goal is to bring music to the community and bring the community together,” said McVee.

“The bursary is set up to inspire youth to achieve their musical and artistic goals, and the fund comes from the 50/50 we do during the concerts throughout the season.

“It’s paying it forward. The younger we start our kids with their love for music the better.”

Applicants may submit their materials via a USB thumb drive, and application packages must be received at PO Box 4, Turner Valley by April 25. Winners will be announced May 31.
