Trustee candidates present platforms

The four candidates seeking to become Rocky View Schools (RVS) Ward 1 trustee presented their platforms to about 300 residents of Crossfield, Oct. 4.

The four candidates seeking to become Rocky View Schools (RVS) Ward 1 trustee presented their platforms to about 300 residents of Crossfield, Oct. 4.

Shauna Traub, Jo Lambert, Norma Lang and incumbent Jen Avery delivered their ideas during the forum, which was moderated by Al Jones.

“We are the fifth-largest jurisdiction in the province out of 62,” said Avery. “Every ward has growth happening, so we still need new schools.”

Avery highlighted her accomplishments as a trustee, which include being a part of re-branding RVS, aligning high schools on a common time table, purchasing laptop computers for teachers and bringing wireless Internet and wall-mounted projectors to classrooms.

Beiseker Chief Administrative Officer Lambert spoke of her 20 years in local government, a commerce degree and administrative experience to strengthen her bid to become a trustee.

“This experience will form a solid foundation from which to evaluate the administrative and financial challenges facing the school board in the coming years,” she said. “I’m running for school trustee… with no other agenda than to use my experience, education and relationships to make the best decision I can for the division as a whole.”

Lambert stressed if she were elected the “three R’s” would be emphasized once again and she spoke of youth dependent on machines.

“I’m sure we’ve all run across the person in the retail store who can’t count back the change without the help of technology,” she said. “This does not mean that I am against technology or incorporating new ideas.”

Outgoing Crossfield councillor Lang highlighted her years as a business analyst for the City of Calgary, experience as a parent volunteer and recent consultation work in the Golden Hills school division.

“I learned how community leaders in that school division work closely with school leaders to advance opportunity and enhance the experience of community at the schools,” said Lang.

“I believe school boards can work collaboratively with local government.”

Traub, an Irricana resident and Kathyrn school board councillor for 12 years, said it is time for the school board to restore confidence in the public and bring a more open process to the table.

“There are things happening in RVS, but there are still challenges ahead,” she said. “My campaign is to focus on public education, restore public faith. My work will be honest, transparent and open.”

The election for Ward 1 trustees is Oct. 18. Call RVS at 403-945-4000 for information on where to vote.
