Some bylaw regulations have been relaxed for Okotoks residents and businesses as they cope with COVID-19.

The Town of Okotoks announced March 28 it would relax the length of time recreational vehicles and shipping containers – including PODS and SeaCans – may be parked outside a residence.

“This temporary change will help families who need to use their RVs for self-isolation or to support extended family who are in self-isolation, and for those who are financially impacted and need to eliminate storage fees,” said Peter Stapley, Okotoks Municipal Enforcement manager, in a press release.

All RVs and storage containers may be kept on driveways until June 30, he said.

Allowing shipping containers will provide businesses that have been forced to close storefronts or leave their locations due to COVID-19 a way to temporarily store their inventory and other business materials until they may open again.

“We have heard from members of the business community that this is something some of them really need at this time,” said Jamie Dugdale, Okotoks planning services manager in a media release. “We are also encouraging other businesses who have room in their approved, fenced outdoor storage areas to offer space for these containers.”

The Town has also removed the requirement for fire permits on front yard fire pits for family entertainment during the pandemic.

“Fire pits are fun activities for kids, as they can roast a hot dog or make s’mores over the open fire,” it says on the Town website. “You can even say hi to your neighbours as they walk by.”

Residents are reminded to keep a six-foot distance from others in accordance with recommendations from Alberta Health Services.

Fires must also be supervised at all time and be put out completely, and should follow the regular guidelines of the Town’s burning bylaw, which indicates the fire pit must be at least two metres away from any structure or property line, it may not be under the branches of any tree or on a deck or porch, and cannot be lit when winds are blowing or gusting above 30 km/h.
