"Well how else would we do it?"

Rancher Gary Thomson exclaimed the obvious when asked why he drives his cattle to pasture on horseback through the foothills past Millarville.

Each year, ranchers take their herd on the road to summer pastures – often west, further into the foothills bordering Kananaskis.

Lifelong friend and fellow cattle man Willie Campbell offers the more practical answer, "It saves money."

"Trucking costs a lot, and it's stressful on the animals," Campbell elaborates.

The two, with the help of friends and in Thomson's case, family, drove 57 pairs of cattle – cows and their calves – from the ranch to their summer pasture to Kananaskis, through the same country historic African-American cowboy and freed slave John Ware called home in the 1800s.
