There will be increased police presence at Foothills Composite High School today after threatening comments were heard during a student conversation.

The RCMP were notified and officers interviewed the students involved. It was determined there was no plan and the risk was low.

Following is at statement from Foothills Composite principal Vince Hunter:

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, Foothills School Division was informed by the RCMP of a potential threat at École Secondaire Foothills Composite High School stemming from overheard student conversations that took place at the school.

In accordance with our protocol, we co-operated fully with the RCMP while they actively responded and investigated. Within a short period of time the RCMP identified and interviewed students involved and determined that there was no plan, determined that risk was low and that the school community is safe.

Students will see an increased police presence at school today and may come home speaking of rumours and misinformation. We understand situations such as these are concerning to parents, students, and the greater community. We want you to be aware that the administration of Foothills School Division and École Secondaire Foothills Composite High School are exercising extreme diligence and an abundance of caution in ensuring the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Rest assured we are utilizing both school and school system recourses and protocols for dealing with risk and threat assessment with our trained staff in collaboration with the RCMP.

We appreciate the level of trust that is required in sending your children to our care and we want you to know that as educators and parents ourselves, we take that responsibility very seriously. We would like to thank the community for their trust as we work together with law enforcement to ensure our schools are safe, caring, and welcoming spaces.

Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Yours in Learning,

Vince Hunter
Principal, École Secondaire Foothills Composite High School
