Superintendent encourages Airdrie-area residents to vote

Rocky View Schools’ (RVS) Superintendent of Schools Greg Bass is encouraging residents to vote in the school board election on Oct. 18.

RVS’ Ward 1 is the only electoral ward with a race, as all other wards were acclaimed. Ward 1 represents residents in the areas of Balzac, Crossfield, Beiseker, Irricana, Kathyrn and rural Airdrie.

“I encourage people to take the opportunity to vote for the trustees that will be representing your children’s education,” said Bass.

“Education is a critical part of our society as a whole.”

Candidates Jennifer Avery (incumbent), Jo-Anne Lambert, Norma Lang, and Shauna Traub will compete for a seat in Ward 1. Students in this ward attend Crossfield Elementary, W.G. Murdoch, Beiseker Community, Kathyrn School or travel from rural Airdrie to attend École Edwards, École Airdrie Middle or George McDougall High School.

“I think it is healthy to have a race in at least one area,” said Bass.

“Democracy is well served when the issues are openly discussed. Every time we can have a public discussion on education, it is a good thing.”

A rural Airdrie candidates’ forum will take place on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at Goldenrod Community Hall.

“The forum will provide an opportunity to engage in discussion about education,” said Bass.

“Our focus is to engage students in their learning but also to engage the community in education.”

Bass said RVS has taken steps to engage the public in educational decisions including programming for Cochrane High School, grade reconfigurations in Kathyrn and Beiseker and consultation on the school calendars.

He said the fact that all but one of the trustees was acclaimed shows that people are generally happy with their trustees.

Ward 1 residents can vote at any one of the following voting stations: Balzac UFA Community Hall, Beiseker Memorial Hall, Beiseker Council Chambers, Coventry Hills School, Crossfield Community Centre, Fairview Community Hall, Goldenrod Community Hall, Irricana Centennial Centre, Irricana Seniors KIK Centre, Kathyrn School, Madden Community Hall, Panorama Hills E. Community Centre, or Symons Valley Ranch House.

Polls are open between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Oct. 18.

“A vote in the upcoming election, not just for the school board but on the municipal side as well, is a vote for democracy itself,” said Bass.
