String of car prowlings put RCMP on alert

High River RCMP are reminding residents to lock their car doors and remove all valuable items from their vehicles after a string of car prowlings during the early moring hours of Sunday, May 18.

Constable Karmen DeGroot with the High River RCMP said eight unlocked vehicles were targeted in High River in the areas of High Ridge Close N.W and High Country Rise N.W.

“Some were just rummaged through, middle consoles were emptied,” she said, “We had a camera that was taken out of one and an iPod.”

DeGroot said the thefts are the first they’ve had reported for quite some time and RCMP are reminding people that warmer weather means more people are wandering outside, sometimes at strange hours.

“What we’re thinking is that with the nicer weather people are out and about,” she said. “We see dog walkers late at night and getting up early.”

RCMP did go door-to-door in the area asking neighbours if they had seen anything, but haven’t had any luck finding information that would lead them to a suspect. They also reminded people to keep an eye out for anything unusual.

“If you see somebody suspicious or somebody walking around that shouldn’t be in your area, then you need to give us a call right away,” DeGroot said.

RCMP are urging anyone with information on the thefts to contact the RCMP or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
