The Town of Okotoks is organizing the second annual Winter Walk day on Feb. 9 on the walking track at the Centennial Arena.

“It’s a day to promote active living and to get moving, February is always a blah month,” said event organizer Marg Cox.

The event is free of charge to anyone from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

It is being held in conjunction with a provincial initiative called Step Up Alberta, encouraging people to walk for a minimum of 15 minutes outdoors. This year’s goal is to have 100,000 Albertans walking a combined total of 1.5 million minutes.

People can come at any time to participate and walk for however long they wish.

Cox encouraged people to challenge their friends and co-workers to participate.

“We’re encouraging groups to take their coffee break and come over to do a quick walk, if they can stay longer that’s great,” she said.

The event includes door prizes and refreshments, as well as informal prizes for different categories such as longest walker or largest group.
