Homeowners in Okotoks can expect to receive their property assessments in the mail this week.

Assessments were mailed out on Jan. 8 and residents have until March 16 to make inquiries or appeal. Homeowners can find additional information on the Town’s website.

“There’s quite comprehensive information there on the whole assessment review board and the process,” said Melanie Heemeryck, Okotoks communications specialist. “They can walk through the frequently-asked questions and there’s even a map of the assessment changes we publish as well.”

The map identifies different areas of town and indicates whether home assessments in a particular neighbourhood have changed by more or less than one per cent over 2017.

According to the map, homes assessed at values more than one per cent higher than last year are predominantly in the Woodhaven, Crystal Shores, Tower Hill, Suntree, Central Heights and Rosemont areas.

Property assessment is an estimate of the typical market value of a property used to determine the homeowner’s portion of the municipal property tax. The assessed value reflects the value of a property as of July 1 of the previous year, and is based on its physical condition and characteristics as of Dec. 31. Tax notices will be mailed out in May, and property taxes are due in June. For more information visit www.okotoks.ca.
