Popular Parade of Garage Sales returns to Okotoks

The event is back after a two-year hiatus, and allows folks to pass on items, find great deals, support charity or community initiatives and get together with friends and neighbours.

After a two-year hiatus, Okotoks’ Parade of Garage Sales is returning on May 21 with 67 garage sales set to take part.

This is the 20th year of the event hosted by the Western Wheel, which in the past saw an average of over 100 garage sales registered each year. A map of all registered garage sales will appear in the May 18 issue of the newspaper.

Karen Pryznyk of Okotoks United Church said they're looking forward to having the sale this year, now that they can open their doors to more people.

“We are really excited, as a church, to be able to come together and do these fundraisers again. That’s part of what makes us a community – to work together on little projects,” Pryznyk said.

Items donated by church members will be up for sale, with a wide range on offer. Proceeds will go into the church’s fund for community projects.

“It’s nice to be able to do some things that create community,” she said.

Volunteers from the church will be on hand during the sale, which will begin on Friday evening, and again on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Coffee, muffins and hot dogs will be available as well, added Pryznyk.

The desire to create a sense of community and have a good time resonates with June Aube, who lives at Sheep River House and is helping organize a garage sale there.

“We all pull together. It’s something to do, we have a good time,” Aube said.

Their sale will take place outdoors at Sheep River House on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but it can be moved inside, if needed.

Residents will donate items to the sale, and the proceeds will go into a social fund for things like dinners and a monthly birthday celebration for residents.

They are also looking forward to holding a Stampede barbecue and a Stampede breakfast with some of the funds raised, which is something they have not been able to do for two or three years, Aube said.

The Town of Okotoks is holding Free Curbside Giveaway Day on the Sunday following the sale, where sellers can leave unsold items out for anyone to pick up during the day, free of charge, and any items not picked up by 4 p.m. need to be removed.
