One day at a time

OkotoksToday and Western Wheel reporter Krista Conrad's daily update on working from home and raising five kids suddenly out of school amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Day 75: Creative and crafty

It’s no secret my kids have a penchant for the arts – drama, music, visual, they love it all.

That’s why I made sure, back in March, to include Art and Music blocks in our weekly schedule, because they thrive when they’re dabbling in creative ventures.

Brooke and Hannah have been painting a solar system on our playroom window for the past week, working on adding spurts of colour during the hours they’re not learning and Brooke’s not working. It’s been a slow-but-steady work in progress.

Today they gave earth its signature green-and-blue hues, and Hannah couldn’t be more excited to get those other seven planets painted for everyone on the path behind our house to see.

She has a true love for astronomy, her newfound passion (she can’t wait to tune in for round two of the space launch tomorrow), and can’t wait to get the entire solar system on display.

It’s not the only foray into colour for our little girl today.

Her class worked on the letter H this week, and since her name begins with that letter she decided it was worthy of an art project. After half an hour at her little table, she proudly displayed her name in block letters, coloured in rainbow stripes.

Later, Brooke (who was supposed to be working on her English reading and questions and got distracted, which is not entirely surprising) presented her with a hand-drawn Elsa colouring page with the words “Into the Unknown,” which just happens to be Hannah’s favourite song from Frozen 2 and was hummed the entire time she coloured.

Thanks a lot, Brooke.

Their craftiness went beyond the arts today, too.

When I had to run out to take photos and cover a cheque presentation, they commandeered my computer screen.

I returned home to messages from each of them in bright text on a Google Doc.

A little note to say “I love you,” and a few little remarks to make me laugh.

This was the perfect way to close out our week which, despite my trepidations Monday evening, turned out to be pretty good all around.

There are three weeks left of homeschool, and if we can all ride this wave with the same spirit the kids showed over the past five days, we’ll make it just fine.

The length of this tunnel remains unknown, but we’re getting close enough to see a little light.
