Visitors to the Town of Okotoks website are invited to provide feedback on the beta version of its new look.

The Town undertook a refresh of its website through 2019 and 2020 after taking community feedback to heart last year to learn what the public thought about the current site and where it could be improved.

“What took the forefront was we needed improved navigation, and that was a top priority, and looking at the menu structure people were looking for more of a prominent search feature and easy-to-find quicklinks from the home page,” said Melanie Heemeryck, communications specialist for the Town.

Changes to the website were also driven by a necessary upgrade to the open-source web content management system used by the Town in order to provide more security for the site itself as well as its users, she said.

Some design elements were enhanced to meet the best practices for municipal websites, such as high contrast, font size and structured meta-data that is readable by screen readers, she said.

One of the notable changes to the new site is a permanently-fixed menu directing users to popular pages like the council meetings and agendas, Okotoks Transit, careers and the waste schedule.

“Our community event calendar has been enhanced as well,” said Heemeryck, noting upcoming events are now prominently displayed at the bottom of the home page. “The intent is to have easier navigation for the community, and that was a top priority identified with this refreshed site.”

The new site is currently in its beta form, and the Town is looking for public feedback on its look, feel and performance prior to its full launch in November, she said.
