Okotoks Council approved a capital plan for the 28.8 acre parcel on the north side of the Sheep River, previously the site of the Okotoks Bible Camp, back in March.

The Town of Okotoks wants to hear from you.

A new survey is seeking input to guide the development of litopatopa Park, formerly the Riverfront Lands, located at 370068 40 Street East.

In March, Okotoks council approved a concept plan for developing the park into a leisure recreation space, approving a budget of $1.5 million for the project which will be phased over the next three years.

Residents have the opportunity to help guide development of litopatopa Park by taking the public engagement survey. The Town is asking for input as to what amenities are priority for installation over the phasing period, as well the theme and style of the play space. The survey is open until Aug.12.

“This project will help meet long-term community needs by providing increased opportunities for access to unprogrammed leisure recreation including day use/picnicking areas, play space, disc golf, river access, and winter use activities such as a skating path and snow shoe trails,” parks manager Christa Michailuck said in a press release.

“It will also increase access to one of the most valued features in our community, the river valley.”

The proposed concept plan was informed by the 2017 Recreation, Parks and Leisure Master Plan, the Social Wellness Framework and Council's Community Life Purpose Statement.

A Traditional Knowledge and Land Use assessment took place on the lands, as part of the Town's work in Truth and Reconciliation.

The concept plan incorporates feedback received from this process and council endorsed an Indigenous site name of “Iitopatopa” Park (phonetic – e’toba‘toba) which means “A place where we return to often.”

The Town’s natural asset inventory also guided the concept planning and uses for the site, which focuses on balancing conservation and respect for the area’s natural assets with complementary and respectful day use features and amenities.
