Okotokians awaiting the arrival of the first Western Wheel of 2023 to get their hands on the new Town calendar were likely disappointed this week.
In years past, the calendar – designed and printed by the Town of Okotoks and delivered by Wheel carriers – contained information about Town events, programs and initiatives, household tips and department contact information, all headlined with photos submitted by residents during an annual contest.
A decision was made by the Town not to print the calendar this year, citing rising printing costs and the environmental impacts of hard-copy printing.
"The decision was made not to print them this year, due to rising costs and resourcing," said Town community engagement communications advisor Marni Hutchinson.
She added the choice was made mid-2021, given the timeline needed to organize, design and print the calendars.
However, the cancellation of the 2023 rendition doesn't mean the calendar is gone forever, according to Hutchinson.
The Town said photo submissions from previous years continue to be used in annual reports, online publications, social media channels and advertising. Residents interested in submitting photos are asked to contact the community engagement team at [email protected].
