A 56-year-old Okotoks man driving a motorcycle was killed after striking a deer in the south side of Calgary early in the morning of May 23.
Calgary Police Insp. Ken Thrower said the man was headed northbound on Macleod Trail/Highway 2 around the 210 Avenue block just inside the south city limits when a deer entered his path from the centre median.
The accident occurred just after 5 a.m.
“I think he was doing everything properly,” said Thrower. “It was just bad timing. He wasn’t able to get around (the deer).”
Thrower said deer and other wildlife are often more active at dawn and dusk.
He encourages motorists to keep a watch for the animals.
“Especially outside the city limits on the highway you’ve got to be so careful,” he said. “You have to watch … like a hawk. It’s a common thing. It’s probably more common than people think.”
The name of the deceased has not yet been released. Speed, alcohol and weather were not a factor in the accident, Thrower said.
