An Okotoks man who fled from police in the early morning hours of Sept. 22 is now in custody after turning himself later that day.

Okotoks RCMP responded to calls for help that came from a man in Westmount shortly after midnight on Tuesday. When RCMP arrived the man fled on foot, resulting in a search with help from RCMP Police Dog Services and Calgary Police Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWC) support units, according to a press release from Okotoks RCMP.

Cpl. Chris Hrynyk, the supervisor on duty, said the helicopter and dogs were called based on the nature of the incident: the man fleeing from police and his history.

“He wasn’t allowed to be where he was at,” said Hrynyk. “It all stems from domestic violence and he was in breach of those conditions again.”

The man was arrested after turning himself in to police mid-afternoon at the Okotoks RCMP detachment, said Hrynyk.

Twenty-two-year-old Samuel Avery Hutton, of Okotoks, has been charged with failure to comply with conditions of release, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance, the press release states.

Hutton is in custody and will appear by phone before a Justice of the Peace to speak to release conditions.

In the press release, Okotoks RCMP thanked members of the public who encountered officers during the event for their cooperation and remind citizens to remain alert when police are active in unfolding events.

“In this case the public was not at risk,” the release states.
