Northridge closure postponed to this week

Sewer repairs that will force the closure of part of Northridge Drive will go ahead this week after last week’s frigid weather forced the project to be postponed.

Sewer repairs that will force the closure of part of Northridge Drive will go ahead this week after last week’s frigid weather forced the project to be postponed.

The southbound lanes of Northridge Drive will be closed between No Frills and Elizabeth Street on Wednesday (Jan. 25) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The road needs to be closed to replace a damaged 50-year-old sanitary sewer in the Elma Street area under the road.

The work was originally scheduled for Jan. 17, but was delayed due to last week’s frigid temperatures.

Nancy Weigel, Okotoks communications manager, said the weather should be good enough on Wednesday to allow the project to proceed.

“The forecast this week is for considerably warm weather,” she said.

Northbound traffic won’t be affected by the move, however, southbound vehicles will be detoured at Milligan Drive. Only vehicles heading to No Frills of the Sandstone community will be allowed to proceed further south.

Weigel encouraged people to be patient and find alternate routes around the construction on either 32 Street, Centre Avenue or Milligan Drive.

The Town had looked at doing the work on a weekend, but it would’ve resulted in a larger traffic disruption because traffic along the stretch of road is lighter during daytime hours on a weekday.

A second closure of a single lane of traffic will be needed at some point in the future to finish the work, but a date hasn’t yet been set.

Pedestrian bridge closure

Repairs will force the closure of the Laurie Boyd Pedestrian bridge in the river valley this weekend.

The bridge, located behind the Okotoks Library, will be closed on Jan. 27 to 28 to allow repairs to the bridge deck to go ahead.

The other pathways in the area will remain open and people can use the North/Southridge Drive bridge to cross the river.

Weigel said they chose to start the work this weekend because no classes are scheduled for the Foothills School division on Friday Jan. 27.

“That is why they chose it to reduce the impact on youths going back and forth to school,” she said.
