Norovirus a rising concern

A spike in Norovirus outbreaks across the province has Alberta Health Services reminding area residents to take steps to help reduce the spread of the virus.

In November and December there were 45 gastrointestinal outbreaks reported in Calgary and surrounding areas. Twenty-three of those were confirmed to be Norovirus, said Dr. Judith MacDonald, medical officer of health for the Calgary zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS).

Last year, during the same time period, there were only nine reported gastrointestinal outbreaks of which only four were confirmed to be Norovirus.

“That’s quite a difference from last year to this year… At this rate, (it appears) the Norovirus activity is continuing on to January,” MacDonald said. “Norovirus can be with us year-round, but it is more common in the winter months. This year, however, there seems to be more of it.”

Norovirus is a gastrointestinal viral infection. Its symptoms can include intense vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches and low-grade fever. Symptoms typically last 48 to 72 hours and, in most cases, do not require special medical attention.

“The virus is intense but it lasts only two to three days, so for most people they don’t need to go see their doctor,” MacDonald said.

However, in some cases, the virus can leave patients dehydrated to the point they must seek medical attention, MacDonald said. Some signs of dehydration include decreased urine output, sunken eyes, and in elderly patients, changes in mental function.

If you suspect you may be ill, MacDonald recommended people stay home. She also suggested they refrain from visiting loved ones in seniors’ residences or hospitals, and from preparing food for others.

Children should also stay home from school or daycare until they are feeling better, she said.

Hand washing and keeping hands away from the face are the best ways to prevent the spread of Norovirus, she added.

How to prevent the spread of Norovirus

1. Always wash your hands after using the bathroom, providing care to an ill person, and before handling food.2. Stay at home if you are feeling sick.3. Avoid visiting family or friends in hospitals, seniors' residences, or continuing care facilities.4. Avoid preparing food for others if you are feeling sick.
