Mountie Minute: Idling vehicle can lead to crime of opportunity

With snow and cold weather upon us, police are reminding the public not to leave running vehicles unattended as they can be easily stolen.
RCMP Break and Enter

From Oct. 31 to Nov. 6, Okotoks RCMP responded to a total of 74 calls for service, including six crimes against persons, eight property/theft crimes, 17 motor vehicle collisions, two suspicious persons, two Mental Health Act calls, two domestic violence calls and one animal-related call.

There were 20 calls of common police activities (lost/found items, 911 hang ups, alarms, driving complaints, abandoned vehicles, etc.).

With the snow and cold weather upon us, Okotoks RCMP wants to remind members of the public not to leave their vehicle idling unattended. Despite it being parked in your driveway or in front of your home, running vehicles with the keys inside them are easy targets for theft. These are considered a crime of opportunity and criminals will often look in neighbourhoods for running vehicles that can be easily stolen.

If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the police right away and be able to provide details such as licence plate, make/model, colour, any distinguishing features, valuables left inside, if it has GPS tracking capability and how much fuel was in the tank.

Have a question or concern? For general inquiries, the public can contact the Okotoks RCMP at 403-995-6400 Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For assistance, the public can contact the non-emergency complaint line at 403-938-4202 and for urgent matters call 9-1-1 (24 hours a day). The public can also report information to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.crimestoppers.ab.ca.
