MD to install stop sign at busy intersection

Residents in the Heritage Pointe area will have to come a stop at a busy intersection in the future.

MD of Foothills council voted unanimously to put a stop sign at the T-intersection of 72 Street E and 226 Avenue at its public meeting Feb. 21 in High River. The intersection is one-mile north of Dunbow Road.

“There are roughly 200 vehicles a day that travel north-south on 72 Street and I guess there have been some near misses at that intersection,” MD deputy director of operation Mike Gallant told councillors.”A lot of folks aren’t aware that they have to yield to the traffic on the right at an uncontrolled intersection. This intersection does warrant the installation of a stop sign.”

The stop sign would go on 226 Avenue for west-bound traffic and allow north-south traffic on 72 Street to continue.

MD of Foothills Mayor Larry Spilak, the representative for the area, endorsed the new signage.

“It does require one (a stop sign),” he said. “I’m just happy to know that we haven’t had an accident there already.”
