Luc Rodrique wants to work with the people of Crossfield, to make sure everyone has a voice in the future of the community.

The 51-year-old former member of the Canadian Air Force has lived in the community for the past four years after retiring from his duties in the armed forces in 2006.

Rodrique’s wife, and daughter, along with four grandchildren call Crossfield home.

Having served on the Crossfield Vision Committee, which was responsible for bringing the voice of the citizen’s to set some of the guidelines for the towns future, Rodrique felt he should stand up for the residents.

“I feel that council has failed to listen to the voice of the people,” said Rodrique. “It’s councils job to listen to the voice of the people, and to act upon that. The people want to know where their money goes, and it’s the mayor’s job to report back to the people.”

Rodrique voiced his opposition to the current Town plan to relocate and build a new civic centre, to replace the ageing, and undersized building currently being used by Town staff and administration on a parcel of land determined by a vote this past June.

“Personally, I wanted to see the civic centre stay where it is now,” said Rodrique. “Unfortunately, that option wasn’t on the ballot.”

Rodrique also feels that green spaces are a very important asset to any community.

“When it comes to the parks, parks are of great value to any town. This is where our children go to play, where we organize activities,” said Rodrique. “It’s important to realize that the things we do now are not just for us, but for our children and the next generation.”

If elected, Rodrique wants to develop a youth and senior council in Crossfield, to ensure all age groups can be represented in the local government.

“There is no one particular issue that will bring the youth and the elders together, but they are a part of this community,” said Rodrique. “Its important that they know they have a voice.”

Rodrique feels that his 20 years of experience in the Armed Forces will make his a strong, and organized mayor.

“You learn self discipline and organization (in the military). It’s a great big organization, and you work with a great number of people,” said Rodrique. “It’s the same thing when you serve your community, you have to be willing to make some personal sacrifices.”

With an all-candidates forum scheduled for Oct. 4, Rodrique hopes people will come out and make their voice heard, and ask questions from their hearts.

“You have to show people that we can make a difference. It’s not just a council, but council has to work in harmony with the people who voted them in,” said Rodrique.

“Your vote is your voice. Exercise that right.”
