The Indigenous word is being celebrated at the Okotoks Public Library.

The library will unveil its Indigenous Voices Youth Collection Nov. 29 at 4:30 p.m.

“We spent about $2,000 on Indigenous books into our library,” said Jeff Blumer, the library’s juvenile services co-ordinator. “We realized that our Indigenous collection was lacking, we are very happy to expand our Indigenous collection.”

A highlight of the unveiling is a presentation by Chantal Stormsong Chagnon from Cree8 of traditional songs and storytelling as well as a Buffalo Story Stones activity.

Thanks to the new collection, Indigenous stories are available in Okotoks for years to come.

At present, the collection is aimed at ages up to 18 years old.

“It is more geared for the youth,” Blumer said. “The collection has kind of everything from stories to history to famous Indigenous people, inventions by Indigenous people…”

Some of the books include a biography on Carey Price, the graphic biography Louis Riel and Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson's award-winning graphic novel The Outside Circle to name just a few.
